Convert an item

Convert an item in My Music when you want to organize it as General, Repertoire, or Technique, or when it should become a focus area under another item.

1. Open the item and choose Convert item from its actions menu.
2. Choose General, Repertoire piece, Technique, or Focus area. The current item type is omitted.
3. For Repertoire, select a music Library record and an instrument. For a Technique, review or edit the existing title and select an instrument. For General, confirm the title and optional instrument.
4. Choose Review conversion, read the summary, and confirm Convert item.

What conversion preserves

Cadenso updates the existing item in place. Its practice logs, notes, labels, focus areas, media links, archive state, and historical statistics remain attached. Its default practice type and the practice types saved on existing sessions are not rewritten.

If you select a different instrument, the confirmation warns that every practice log attached to the item will also be updated to that instrument. This keeps the item and its complete history associated with one instrument.

If another item already uses the selected repertoire connection, Cadenso keeps both items unchanged and offers to open the existing item. Conversion never merges two items implicitly.

Repertoire and Technique connections

To convert an item to Repertoire, search the music Library for a piece or movement. The item gains that connection while retaining its focus areas and history.

Converting a repertoire item to General or Technique disconnects it from its music library piece or movement. The confirmation explains this before you convert it.

Conversion creates a user-named technique item from the existing title, which you can edit before confirming. Built-in names such as Scales, Arpeggios, and Chords are reserved for their official technique items, so choose another title to continue with the conversion. Technique items with an official category retain their identity and cannot be converted. Structured key details remain available during practice, while the item’s smaller parts continue to be called focus areas.

Convert an item to a focus area

Choose Focus area when the content belongs under another item instead of remaining a top-level item. Search for and select the destination item, then review or edit the title of the new focus area. The destination may already contain focus areas; the conversion adds another one.

The source item’s practice logs and direct notes move to the new focus area, and its labels are added to the destination item. After everything moves successfully, the original item is permanently removed. Item-specific settings and media links do not carry over. If the source item already has focus areas, the conversion screen warns that they will also move directly under the destination as separate focus areas. They do not become nested inside the new focus area.

Convert a focus area to an item

Convert a focus area when it should become an independent top-level item:

1. Open the focus area and choose Convert to My Music item from its actions menu.
2. Choose General, Repertoire piece, or Technique.
3. Review the details copied from the focus area. For Repertoire, select a piece or movement from the Library.
4. Choose Review conversion, read the summary, and confirm Add item.

The focus area’s linked practice logs and direct notes move to the new item. After everything moves successfully, the original focus area is permanently removed. Its measure range and position do not carry over.

If any moved logs also use other focus areas, Cadenso shows their count before conversion. Moving those logs under a new item means they cannot keep focus areas belonging to the old parent, so all focus area links are removed from those logs. Other focus areas under the old item remain unchanged.

If another item already uses the selected music library connection, Cadenso keeps the focus area unchanged and offers to open the existing item instead.
