A technique item is a place in My Music for technical work that benefits from structured details. It brings together notes, focus areas, and practice sessions across keys and subtypes.
Built-in technique items
Cadenso provides built-in technique items for Scales, Arpeggios, and Chords. A built-in technique belongs to an instrument and supports:
- a key;
- category-specific subtypes;
- optional focus areas;
- technique-specific tempo, key, and consistency statistics.
Use one built-in technique item for the category and instrument instead of creating a separate item for every key or subtype. Cadenso records the exact combination in each practice session.
User-named technique items
Create a user-named technique item for technical work that does not belong to a built-in category, such as Long tones or Bow control.
It can record a key in each practice session and appears in technique statistics, but it does not offer the category-specific subtypes used by Scales, Arpeggios, or Chords.
Use a technique item when structured technique tracking is useful. Use General when the activity only needs a flexible workspace and general item statistics.
Focus areas in technique items
A focus area represents a recurring goal inside the technique, such as cleaner articulation, smoother transitions, contrary motion, or rhythmic groups. It is the same focus area concept used for Repertoire and General items.
When you practice a technique item, you can select one or more focus areas together with its key and subtype. The focus area remains reusable across different structured combinations.
Practiced variations
A practiced variation combines the structured details saved in a technique session with at most one focus area. Depending on the technique, it can include a key, subtype, and one selected focus area.
For example, a C major session with Long tone focus and Even rhythm contributes to two variations: C major — Long tone focus and C major — Even rhythm. It does not create a third combined variation.
Cadenso creates practiced variations automatically when you save technique logs. You do not create or edit them separately.
Open a built-in technique item and find Practiced Variations. Select a variation to:
- review its exact technique details;
- see matching sessions and notes;
- practice the same combination again;
- open Statistics with matching technique filters.
A focus area describes a reusable goal you define. One focus area can appear in several practiced variations with different keys or subtypes. When a session has multiple focus areas, Cadenso divides its practice time evenly among their individual variations.
